Unless you have had your head buried in the sand for the last few days you probably know that a federal election campaign is underway with the vote occurring on May 2, 2011. I’m still not sure why Ignatieff wanted an election, especially since the Conservatives are 10 to 20 points ahead of them, depending on which poll you look at, and are in majority government territory. My theory is that he has become tired of waiting to become Prime Minister, the job he wanted when he came up from the States five years ago. He will do his best in the campaign and, perhaps if something drastic happens on the campaign trial, he will become Prime Minister. In the more likely scenario of a loss to the Tories, he will get out of politics and back to teaching in some university (maybe back to Harvard). Right now it’s looking like the Conservatives will get a majority or at least a strong minority on election day. But there is still five weeks of campaigning ahead and things can change.
